Poker Terms - Straddle

A straddle in poker is when a player, usually the one directly to the left of the big blind (under the gun) puts in a raise pre-flop to double the amount of the big blind before they look at their cards. This is effectively a third blind which increases the pot size and is designed to create more action in the game. It doesn’t have to stop there though, if they wish the next player may choose to double that bet without seeing their hand first either. The next player can also do the same and so on. If you’ve ever watched a live poker cash game on TV like GSN’s High Stakes Poker you may well have seen players putting on a straddle, they often do it if they feel some of the other players are playing too tight and the game needs more action. This also makes for very entertaining poker to watch.
